In many cases field values are so low that we don’t need to look at actual dosimetry values. We can instead look at unperturbed field: measure field in positions in empty space where people might be – easier to measure and simulate, conservative but unreliable. We only know the risk is low.
As a standard component of CST Studio Suite we have a number of biological models which are actually used in standard compliance testing. The SAM phantom comes with a CTIA hand and spacer, and we have auto-gripping hand, which comes in three configurations and can be used to automatically adjust to different phone sizes, holding the phone while not intersecting with it.
At mm-wave frequencies, the fields do not penetrate into human tissue very far, but only affect the outside layer of the body. For this reason the standards for safety require evaluation of fields on planes a certain distance from the phone, e.g. 2 cm. For 5G we have Maximum Permitted Exposure limits of the power density. These standards are still in development and we are participating actively in their development as far as simulation is concerned.
